Female Arrested!!
News:
19-year-old female virus-writer who goes by the name of "Gigabyte" was arrested Monday, disaffirming the stereotype that hackers are male. According to TechTV, Gigabyte began writing programs when she was just 6-years-old, created her first computer worm at 14 and before turning 18 became only the second person to write a virus in C-sharp, the language of Microsoft's .Net platform. Wow! Belgian police arrested a 19-year-old female technology student who gained international notoriety for creating computer viruses, local news media reported Saturday. The woman, identified only by her nickname "Gigabyte," was charged with computer data sabotage under legislation introduced in 2000 to deal with cyber-crime, the daily La Libre Belgique reported. If convicted, she faces up to three years in prison and fines of up to euro 100,000 (US$127,000). Police reportedly released the woman after 24 hours, confiscated her five computers and shut down her Web site. She was arrested Monday in her hometown of Mechelen, 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Brussels. "She was preparing to publish new viruses on this site," Inspector Olivier Bogaert of the Belgium police was quoted as telling La Libre Belgique. The Computer Crimes Unit inspector said Gigabyte was an extremely talented student. "I told her it was a pity that she did not put her skills to a more positive use," he told the paper. Her youth and gender helped gain Gigabyte notoriety in the male-dominated world of computer hackers. |
I think I'm in love!!!

I agree with Jay...
Yes, female coders are rare, and more appealing for that reason, but.. She was writing viruses. Fuck that, she deserves whatever punishment she gets. Regards |
i agree with Jay and Satyric0n. i hate viruses.
|
lets say so:
PC VIRUSes are STUPIDITY TESTs of: 1.YOU 2.M$ |
yeah right

While it is somewhat contradictory for those of us engaged in Reverse Engineering to attempt to claim a superior moral position on all things related to this subject, very few of us can be said to be actively engaged in seeking out and intentionally damaging other people's computer systems, data, or ability to communicate.
Those who act out of deliberate malice and with destructive intent deserve the severe punishment they recieve. Many American Indian peoples used to demonstrate their superior skills at fighting by "count coup" or simply "toughing" their "enemy" with a stick used for that purpose. I would have no problem with a skilled "hacker" who was satisfied with simply gaining entry on another system and "counting coup" with some form of a pop message that advised of the success of their effort, without damaging the system or hijacking it for some other destructive purpose. Eval is correct, however that viruii are, in many ways made possible through the arrogance of M$ and their bloated code, although people were "hacking" into, and do still hack into machines without M$ systems. His second point is also correct, that many make the work of hackers far to easy by failing to take even the most basic precautions. Those folks have to share much of the responsibility for the success of the virii distributors, but their fault would still be only ignorance or laziness, not malice. Regards, |
My SORRYes for my LINEAR post;
there i just tried to by SHORT-EST in words. (yah, wrong attitude) Sorry, because LAMERS! Because to be a Lamer, not means to be stupid. & many lamers are damaged from virii. Here virii sux! |
fuck this wh0re..
i hate virus authors what publish own work to public ..and talk about m$? nah..stupid childs.. |

On the internet, theres little to no way of knowing the sex of a person, and a lot of tech-oriented females tend to not draw attention to their gender online (re: <dr. cool> OMG YOU ARE A GIRL? [private] <dr. cool> CYBER?). The last programming job i was hired to do had as many female coders and support staff as males, and a deal of them were in direction and managerial positions. I'm not sure about everywhere else, but it looks to me that the women of technology today have a much greater chance of taking the place of a male as compared with 5, maybe even less years ago. As for her arrest for virus making, what exactly did she make? Quote:
I'm not defending virus writers here, but i think there are differences between each writer's intentions. Just because a virus can be malicious doesn't mean the writer intended to do damage. It sounds to me like the viruses she wrote were demonstrations rather than malicious acts. If she's convicted, it'll be a dark day. |

Let me tell you an incident which took place in my locality. There was a cybercafe, offcourse its sealed by the police, and the owner was an extremely intelligent chap. He had the guts to hack the POLICE website  , obviously got caught. The next day he made headlines in local newspapers. He was portrayed as cyber criminal by news reporters with all abuses. The most wise thing he did was that he didn't deface the website just gained entry. After a few days there was a report that he has been employed by the cyber crime detection cell for his brilliant computing skills. :) Moral of the story: If you got computing skills and still not getting a job then do ETHICAL hacking :D ;) BTW the above incident is not a makeup...it's true :) |

Though her site does seem to be more exhibitionist than malicious (c#, tcl viruses, other obscurities), there are viruses that she has there that she put there for the sole purpose of doing damage. Problem with the case at hand is that she didn't infect anybody with it, she put it up for people to do whatever they want with it. The 'selling a knife doesn't imply responsibility for someone killing a person with it' defence will probably keep her out of jail, but i'd guess theres be some minor punishment incurred from it. Also, your story is hard to believe. A cybercrime unit hiring a criminal who hacked the cybercrime unit doesn't sound like an obvious (or intelligent) thing to do. |
That may sound like Ripleys Believe it or not! But do believe it ;)
If u still don't believe it then do watch this unbelievable TV program. ;) What he did was ETHICAL hacking...he did not deface the website or damage any data. As for GIGABYTE, she said she was a part of some group METAPHASE. Did she mention what adventures she did with that group. Might be unethical ones...do u deny the possibilty? Lets see what the court has to say on the evidences gathered by the police. The news will be out soon. So lets wait and see. What she did was indeed ethical or malicious. |
Located interviews of Knowdeth & Evul- Metaphase Team. Gigabyte was a member of this team.

Eleven:
Let's consider by analogy. If I made bombs, but didn't actually set them off myself, but instead just left them where anyone could pick one up and do with it what they wanted, could I truely claim I wasn't responsible for the expolsion which was sure to follow? After all, I didn't actually blow anything up myself, now did I? I'm just an innocent "bomb maker". I only make them to practice my skill at being a clever bomb maker. I only left them where anyone could pick one up so that you all would know just how truely clever I really was. How could I be responsible for what other people do with bombs I created and only left lying around? Do you hear that "ticking" sound? That's not MY fault, but I would recommend you take cover. Regards, |

if we dedicated so much to this subject,
interesting will research-reverse her viruses for qualify them.. where are her viruses!? |
source code sharp
h**p://www.google.be/search?q=cache:itmDFwPOn5sJ:coderz.net/gigabyte/sharp.html+&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8
ASM part of the code (Click here to go to the C# part.) ; Virus Name: Sharp ; Version: A ; Type: Win32 EXE Prepender ; Author: Gigabyte [Metaphase] ; Homepage: h**p://coderz.net/gigabyte p.s. don't go there without the proper protection:eek: |
>>p.s. don't go there without the proper protection
what you mean? |
Go there with Anti-Virus software....malicious script ;)
|
about 45min i lost while converting that code for MASM8;
but i'm not sure if it is 100% origin. finally MASM assembles it & i see in .data section .NET executu?? so bcoz i havn't this mscoree.dll, it is usable for me?? that's all folks? something else? **** >Go there with Anti-Virus software... heh!? i not use any anti-vir.. did you read my first post in this thread |
yeh, guys, again you trust in anti-vir!?
script is in asm-code for viri.exe. This virus sends himself by creating & executing sharp.vbs script. that is.. & .NET module used for infect files. So I qualify this virus as.. little girls toy. that is terrible to catch such little girl.. |

Take this, you break into a house and watch someone elses cable tv. You break into someones house and steal a loaf of bread. Is the former ethical because no damage was done? Quote:
The US sells bombs all the time, do they take responsibility when one falls into the hands of a terrorist? |

. She was just developing more smart techniques challenging her self at first then the virus scene. She put the viruses on her web site for educational purposes. If you are a truck driver and went to a Bomb making academy you didn't pay enough attention then who is blamed? You can work on Anthrax in you lab, you can distribte it and share it with interested researchers. this is legal and nothing wrong goes with it. If someone's curiosity make him dring a cup of Anthrax And he knows the consequences, who is blamed? she is very talented girl. i think a huge capitalist organization is behind the chase of the innocent virus scene. |
damaging solely private things is not ethical.
but if there is mess THE IDEA, than ethic shut-ups e.g. shut-downs. hehe, who will sad, that hacking m$ is not ethi-ethi-cal-cal-cal :)??????????? |
>she is very talented girl.
from given viri i can't assume big talents(at least in "virology"). maybe another viri you give me? |
another girls toy

h**p://www.google.be/search?q=cache:w-o_Ocs1zpwJ:coderz.net/gigabyte/yahasux.h+&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8 evaluator: PC VIRUSes are STUPIDITY TESTs of: 1.YOU 2.M$ me: i'm not that smart,i need anti-vir software to protect me(i think) |
one is again vbs script (don't know-can't comment)
second probably is C source; (don't know-can't assemble)but seems not bad & this all 3 work is her product? or group's product? |
The one in C proves that 'some' virii makers are skilled programmers with their own tricks and knowledge wich they pass on to fellow-soles (don't know if that word exists) on the web, like reversers do on this board.
If it's ethical or not is not for me to decide because a big percentage of the web is offending to someone, while not to someone else. >>& this all 3 work is her product? i guess yes:cool: |
It's contradictory that most of us, reversers or crackers, are censuring a virus writer. It's true that a virus can cause harm. As probably most of us have suffer the consequences of a virus infection we certainly don't get along with virus writers. But very few of us write our software for selling so it doesn't hurt us to crack or reverse them.
Publishing her virus work on her web site is as objectionable as publishing the tools a cracker needs, as some of us do. Eleven points out wisely that if you are going to blame her for harm caused by other people using her tools with nasty intentions you must apply that same criteria for harm caused by Saddam using chemical weapons sold to him by the American gov. We must apply the same yardstick! Before I get too OT, I don't think learning from reversing hurts anyone. And the same can be said from a virus writer. Specially if prison is at stake. It just depends on the intention. Remember that crackers were put along hackers when M$ tried to convince the media that they were linked to terrorists! |

I used to take a look once in a while at coderz.net and remember gigabyte as the webmistress of this site providing webspace to virus coders ... but I thought that gigabyte presented herself has a girl/female to somehow hide her real identity ... in other words I thought gigabyte to be a male. I was wrong, she is indeed a girl.
I'm impressed by this arrest .. virus coders that publicize themselves with even a public website are in my opinion absolutely harmless. It is not them that one should fear. yaa |
...
I had a few Talks with Giga ages ago on Undernet and must say that she is a really nice Person.
I hope the best for her :x |
It's really a sad news. Instead of finding who is ddosing wasm.ru belgian police does some nonsense: jails poor girl because of virii. And what problem with writing virii if she didn't spread them?
P.S. WASM.RU is back online :). |
