Yeah, that "you know where to find us otherwise don't try" bull is so SO annoying, if you're not looking for people in your NFO then don't put anything about it :P
I believe it's very possible to get into a group this way. Many NFO's have an email address you can send a message to, it's not the core of the scene but you're never going to start there anyways.
